“We showed people there is quality in our league”

UCD v BOHEMIANS
SSE Airtricity League
Monday July 15 2019, UCD Bowl, 7.45pm

Keith Ward hopes newcomers to League of Ireland grounds in recent days will have been suitably impressed to make a return trip.

Bohemians and St Patrick’s both entertained Europa League winners Chelsea this week.

First they came to Dalymount Park on Wednesday in Frank Lampard’s first game in the charge of the visitors.

Keith Long’s side found themselves a goal down inside ten minutes.

But the assured response perhaps caught the Londoners somewhat off-guard and Bohs’ endeavours eventually paid off with an equalising goal a minute from time, scored by trialist Eric Molloy, which 14-year-old debutant Evan Ferguson helped to set up.

Wardy, 28, said: “It was a great night on Wednesday for the club. As a team I think we gave a very good account of ourselves.

“The way we played, I think outsiders to the league at the game will have been impressed.

“We kept the ball and we went at them when we could. We know it was only a friendly but hopefully we showed people there is quality in our league and that we can play.”

Bohs emptied their bench on Wednesday – it was very much an exhibition game. But it is back to real business tomorrow when they face a resurgent UCD in Belfield.

Collie O’Neill has seen key men Conor Davis, Neil Farrugia and Gary O’Neill leave the club in recent weeks but has also seen his team move off the foot of the table in the same period.

First they beat Finn Harps in a relegation six-pointer. And on Friday they both helped Bohs’ bid to stay in third but also provided Long’s men a reminder – if one was needed – that they are capable of getting results as they drew 0-0 away to fourth-placed Derry City.

Ward said: “You can’t underestimate UCD, they’ve got good young players. We know they’ve lost some players but they still have quality and they’ve brought in Jack Keaney from Sligo too.

“They’ve got a win and a draw in their last two games and we are in for a tricky game. We’ve done our homework and we know it will be difficult.”

To get a result, Bohs will need to be more potent in front of goal than they have in recent weeks. James Talbot has claimed three clean sheets from four but up front, Bohs have fired blanks in recent 0-0 draws against Derry City and Cork City.

Ward concedes they are missing key man Dinny Corcoran, out with an ankle injury. But he has backed Bohs’ attacking players, himself included, to come up with the goods.

He said: “When any team loses their main striker it can be difficult. It’s up to us as attacking players to step up.

“When we don’t keep clean sheets, we’re at our defenders so as attacking players we know we need to chip in at the other end too.

“We’re working hard in training to do that and I know we can improve.”

One man in midfield who has chipped in at various stages this season is Danny Mandroiu.

Up until this season, Ward tended to occupy the role of attacking midfielder sitting in behind the lone striker.

But Mandroiu’s form in that position has seen Ward moved out to the left wing, while they both also vie for set-piece duties.

Ward laughs: “I nearly scored a free-kick against Derry! Our rivalry is a healthy one, but I’m older and better looking.

“The fans have taken to him, he’s been great for us. Obviously, everyone was talking about the goal against Rovers and he deserved to win Player of the Month.

“But he’s been one of the standout players in the league and they’re the kind of players you want to play with. I don’t mind playing on the wing, the main thing is I’m playing and contributing to the team.”

Bohs U17 runners-up in San Marino Cup

After six matches in 96 hours, the Bohs U17s reached the final of the San Marino Cup where they faced Belgica Boys yesterday.

A string of six injuries and 32° heat saw Bohs tire in the second half and eventually succumb to a 2-0 defeat.

All the lads can look back and be extremely proud of how they represented the club and country over the five days of competition.

Well done all. Everyone at the club is very proud of you.

The Bohs-SKB U15 star didn’t look out of place – nearly scoring himself before setting up the equaliser. One for the future.

South Africa call-up for Bohs U19

Congratulations to Bohemians U19 midfielder Katlego Mashigo who has been called up by the South Africa U20s.

Mashigo, born in Pretoria Shoshanguve but who moved to Ireland aged five, is a product of our partners at St Kevin’s Boys FC and signed for Craig Sexton’s U19s from Fleetwood Town last month.

He travels to Johannesburg tomorrow for training ahead of the 2020 All Africa Games Finals in Morocco, which commence Tuesday August 16 and run until Saturday August 31.

Best of luck to Katlego and all his Bafana Bafana team-mates.

ALI REGHBA JOINS LEICESTER CITY

Bohemians can confirm that Ali Reghba has joined Premier League side Leicester City for an undisclosed fee subject to international clearance.

The 19-year-old shot to prominence last season when he rewarded Keith Long’s faith in him by scoring twice in his league debut in a 3-1 Dublin derby win away against St Patrick’s Athletic.

That first-team breakthrough came as no surprise to those working behind the scene at Bohs after the starring role Reghba has had for the club’s U19s.

Reghba shone for Craig Sexton’s Bohs U19s last term where his season highlights included scoring both goals in the Enda McGuill Cup final victory away to St Pat’s, netting in the Uefa Youth League against FC Midtjylland and capping it all off with the winner in the SSE Airtricity U19 League final away to Shamrock Rovers.

He impressed on trial for Leicester in winter before signing his first professional contract with Bohs.

Reghba, like Bohs full-back Andy Lyons, is set to fly to Armenia next week to represent Ireland in the U19 European Championships.

Tom Mohan’s side face Norway on July 15 before they take on France and Czech Republic.

Manager Keith Long said: “Everyone at Bohemians wishes Ali the very best of luck in his move and in Armenia with the U19s.

“He’s a successful graduate of our U19s and underage system and we wish him the very best for the future.”

THORNTON JOINS BRAY ON LOAN

Bohemians U19 captain Dylan Thornton has joined Bray Wanderers on loan to help him gain valuable first-team experience.

Bohs first-team manager Keith Long said: “Dylan is a brilliant lad, who has done fantastically well for us since coming to the club.

“He came into our U17s with Jimmy Mowlds from St Joseph’s but this is his third season with our U19s now.

“He’s done it all at that level. He’s captained our U19s, he’s won two league titles and he has represented his club in Europe in the Uefa Youth League.

“We feel that he is at a stage now where he needs to play first-team football to bring him forward even further.

“While we feel he’s not quite ready to do that with us just yet that being exposed to senior men’s football at Bray can help him hugely with his development.

“That can keep him progressing and developing as a player further instead of maybe stagnating a bit at U19 level where he’s done everything for us at this stage.

“We wish every success for him and for Bray during his time with them.”

Thornton, 19, will remain with Seagulls until the end of the season. Alex Kelly will take up the captain’s armband for Craig Sexton’s Bohs U19s.

BOHEMIANS 0 DERRY CITY 0

Spoils shared in the race for the European spots as an injury hit Bohs side played out a 0-0 against an impressive Derry City side.

Both sides came into tonights epic encounter on a high following huge victories on Friday and showed their attacking intent from the off, in a hugely entertaining and open encounter in the Dalymount sunshine.

The visitors, six points behind Bohs at the start of play, went closest early on when the busy Ciaran Harkin had James Talbot scrambling across his goal with an effort from 25 yards out.

Declan Devine’s men continued to stroke the ball around neatly and thought they had taken the lead when the in-form Junior Ogedi-Uzokwe cut inside from the left wing and reversed his shot back towards the near post as Talbot stood and watched it go narrowly wide.

The Gypsie’s, minus star man Danny Mandroiu with a slight calf strain, responded well. Keith Ward began to look a threat going close with a couple of efforts from distance.

The second ha;f followed much of the same pattern of the first, Ward looking the most threatening for the home side volleying just over after the restart.

The excellent Barry McNamee had the biggest chance of the second half, winning the ball back from skipper for the evening Darragh Leahy inside his own box. Just as he looked to square to David Parkhouse for a tap in, out flew Talbot to smother the danger.

The Bohs stopper wasn’t done there, just moments later producing an incredible double save, first to deny Parkhouse who was put clean through by McNamee, then to deny Junior on the follow up.

Bohs man-of-the-match Keith Ward went close agaiin from distance in the dying minutes, but it just wasn’t to be for the fan favourite as time trickled away.

With such a quick turn around from Friday night both teams would probably be happy with a point on reflection, especially as St. Pat’s suffered defeat at home to Shamrock Rovers.
