BOHEMIANS 5 LONGFORD TOWN 1
In a confident pre-season performance on Saturday morning, which saw Stephen Paisley make his Bohemians debut as a second-half substitute against the club where he won the FAI Cup twice, the Gypsies swept aside First Division outfit Longford Town 5-1 at IT Blanchardstown.
Goals from Chris Lyons, Luke Byrne, Darragh Hanaphy, Keith Buckley and Ryan McEvoy saw the Gypsies run out emphatic winners, writes ROBERT O’REARDON.
Although this contest was closer than the final scoreline suggested, it was Aaron Callaghan’s side who set the tone from the off.
Early shots from Andy Mulligan and McEvoy saw the Gypsies come close before Lyons won a penalty having been fouled by Town keeper Paul Hunt. The referee had consulted with his linesman and looked set to reverse his decision before eventually awarding the spot-kick, which was duly converted by Lyons, a striker signed from UCD over the closed season.
Going behind sparked Tony Cousins’ Longford into life. The Town started to create chances and would have been level had it not been for some last-ditch tackles from Bohs centre-backs Heary and Roberto Lopes. Evergreen Heary, 36, in particular kept the Midlanders at bay.
But soon afterwards, Bohs doubled their advantage as Ireland Under-19 international Byrne cut in from the left on to his less-favoured right foot before firing a rasping drive into the corner. With a 2-0 lead, the Gypsies were cruising at the break.
The second half started off as lively as the first. But this time it was Longford beginning to press and they got their reward on 55 minutes as Gavin Doyle found the net to pull it back to 2-1.
Managing against his former club, Callaghan began to ring the changes. On came Hanaphy, Michael Barker, Paisley and Conor O’Brien as Bohs began to take control again.
Less than five minutes after his introduction, Hanaphy found himself one-on-one with Hunt and the former Newry City striker’s lob made it 3-1.
But the Gypsies weren’t finished yet. Two minutes later, Buckley’s superb chip from 25 yards flew past the keeper much to the delight of his team-mates and manager before McEvoy wrapped up the scoring with a placed finish from 12 yards in the dying embers of the game.

Last March, Bohemians and St Pat’s fans contributed over €1200 to a bucket collection for the Kasey Kelly Trust Fund and plans are afoot to have a similar collection this season.
In November 2011, aged just 11 months, Kasey was diagnosed as having an aggressive malignant brain tumour. Her chances of survival were rated as low as one in 10. Fast-forward 15 months, and courageous Kasey is continuing to defy those odds.
A second opinion with experts at Boston’s Dana-Farber Cancer Institute said Kasey had a 50 per cent chance of survival. But conservative estimates put the cost for little Kasey’s treatment in America at close to €500,000.
The fundraising campaign, however, has so far brought in excess of €250,000, which was enough to allow Kasey’s parents to accompany her to Boston in March 2012 to begin treatment.
And in an article in last weekend’s Sunday Independent, Kasey was described as having had “a revolutionary proton beam treatment, plus chemo, radiotherapy and a cocktail of drugs, which has brought about a dramatic difference in her MRI scans.”
Mum Michelle told the Sunday Independent: ”Her scan in September showed that the tumours had grown in size and the cancer cells were in her spine. But the one in November showed that her spine was clear and the tumours had shrunk dramatically in size, which was just amazing.
“The doctors were delighted, and even though none of us knows what’s down the line for her, Kasey is so strong and she really is such a little fighter. It’s hard being away from everyone, and it’smgreat when our friends and family visit.
“My mam and brothers came over for Christmas and my grandparents will be over again in March, and that makes a huge difference.”
Kasey fight continues. It is intended that she will begin a stem-cell transplant, using cells harvested from her several months ago. During this period, she will be in isolation for six weeks and will be subject to high doses of chemotherapy.
Michelle added: “I’m dreading it as Kasey will be very sick during this process, but it’s vital.
“She is coming along great now. She has her hair back — it sticks out everywhere so she looks like Liam Gallagher — and she stands and is trying to walk, although her balance isn’t great.
“She is beginning to eat a bit, which is brilliant as they said that her swallow was paralysed back home, but they’ve discovered here that it was just lazy rather than paralysed. She is still fed through a line in her stomach, and I”m trying to build her up as she will lose weight during the transplant.”

The Airtricity League’s updated fixture list has confirmed times and dates for this season’s midweek games as well as matches moved to avoid clashing with Republic of Ireland international nights.
Among the Bohemians fixtures confirmed is our EA Sports Cup opener with UCD, which is now penciled in to take place on Monday March 11th at Dalymount Park, with a 7.45pm kick-off.
Early-season Dublin derbies away to to St Patrick’s Athletic and Shelbourne have been set for Saturday March 23rd (kick-off 5pm) and Monday April 1st (kick-off 7pm) respectively.

Even as they prepare together for the new league season, Bohemian midfielders Stephen Traynor and Andy Mulligan are also preparing to oppose each other.
Their college teams compete in a CUFL (Colleges and Universities Football League) semi-final next Wednesday.
Traynor plays with DCU, who have reached the semi-finals for the first time. They meet title holders IT Carlow, for whom Mulligan scored twice in their 5-1 quarter-final demolition of University of Limerick.
The semi-final takes place at Home Farm FC, Whitehall, on Wednesday 20 February (2pm). The following week, DCU compete again for college football honours in the Collingwood Cup being staged at University of Ulster Jordanstown.
Former Bohemians David Lodola, Dan Mahon and Robbie Gaul are also members of the DCU squad.
