SVP TAKE CENTRE STAGE

There was a full house at Clontarf’s Viking Theatre on Monday (4 February) when Peter Sheridan presented his latest solo show in aid of St Vincent de Paul (SVP).

Bohemian FC organised the fundraiser in association with the Viking Theatre. After the performance, a cheque for €650 was presented to SVP Finglas.

Sheridan’s show, Break A Leg, is based on his second memoir, recently published under the same title.

The performance weaves together stories from Sheridan’s earliest days in amateur drama under his father’s guidance to his pioneering projects of the 1980s in community drama in Dublin’s inner city. The run continues at the Viking Theatre until Saturday (9 February).

Accepting the cheque on behalf of SVP, Jimmy Scurry told the audience that he too was brought up in Sherriff Street and could confirm that the people living in the flats, like his own family, regarded the people in the houses, like the Sheridan family, as “snobs”!

In recognition of their contribution to the event, Bohemian PRO Tommy Hynes presented Laura Dowdall and Andy Murray of the Viking Theatre and Peter Sheridan with honorary membership of Bohemian FC.

PAISLEY SAYS YES

Bohemians have completed the signing of three-time FAI Cup-winning defender Stephen Paisley.

The centre-back, 29, joins from north Dublin rivals Shelbourne after spending the last three seasons at Tolka Park.

During his time there, Paisley helped Shels win promotion back to the Premier Division in 2010, was an FAI Cup runner-up in 2011 and was named Airtricity/SWAI Player of the Month for November 2011.

Dubliner Paisley – a former Ireland Under-21 international – began his career as a trainee at Manchester City, returning home in 2003 to join Alan Mathews’ Longford Town where he won back-to-back FAI Cups in 2003  and 2004.

He left the Town in 2007 to join St Patrick’s Athletic before moving on to Sporting Fingal in 2009 where he once again lifted the Blue Riband trophy.

Paisley said: “Having played against Bohs last season with Shels, I knew they had a lot of very good young players. But you also need to have a bit of experience and hopefully I can bring that with me and help the younger players along.

“Most of the players we have now are in their early 20s or younger and haven’t played much League of Ireland football, so it will be up to the older heads like myself, Owen Heary and Dave Mulcahy to give a bit of guidance.

“And it’s good to have Dean Delany on board as well. I played with him for 2½ years at Shels and I know what a good keeper he is.

“But I am excited about the move to Bohs. I had another serious offer on the table after I left Shels but going to Bohs was an easy decision for me.

“Bohs finished mid-table last season and they’d like to improve on that and finish higher up, so that’s what we will aim for.

“With the budgets that other clubs are working off, it would be very hard for a club like Bohs to mount a real challenge for the league. But if we can get off to a good start, I think we could move into the top four or five and try to go on a run in one of the cup competitions.”

And bringing the senior squad tally up to 23 players is left-back Dara Reynor.

Reynor, who turns 20 next week, was formerly on the books of St Patrick’s Atheletic, Monaghan United and Longford Town.

Go on… break a leg

Bohemian FC is hosting a special performance of Peter Sheridan’s one-man show at the Viking Theatre, Clontarf, on Monday February 4th.

This performance of Break A Leg will be a fundraiser for the Society of St Vincent de Paul.

Bohemians are acknowledging in this way the society’s work to alleviate the effects on so many people of the current crisis.

Sheridan has had big success with his books of memoirs, 44, Forty-Seven Roses and Break A Leg. The current show is a first-ever run based on the most recent volume.

LOI LAST MAN STANDING 2013

The Bohemians Last Man Standing competition is BACK for 2013.

We will be using the League of Ireland Premier and First division fixtures, starting with the opening day fixtures on March 8th.

The Last Man Standing competitions have raised over €20,000 for Bohemians in the last three season and the same amount has been given out in prize money.

These competitions have raised vital funds for the club and we aim to continue our efforts to support Bohs on and off the pitch. We encourage all true Gypsies to enter the competition and to recruit friends and family members to join in. For this series, the entry fee is just €10

It’s easy to take part and there’s fun and excitement in the competition, as well as the satisfaction of knowing that half of all the entry fees goes to Bohemian Football Club. There’s also potentially a massive prize for the winner of the competition.

To play, you pick a team from the League of Ireland in week one. If they win you go through to next round where you pick another team (you cannot pick the same team twice). If your team loses or draws you are out. Simple as that.

If you join the competition you get an email notice ahead of each round of fixtures with a deadline to reply with your selection.

This continues until we have a Last Man Standing (or woman, as we have had more than one female winner!), who picks up the prize money. If more than one person is still standing after 10 matches, then they will share the pot of all entry fees received.

SQUAD BUILDING CONTINUES

Bohemian FC has signed 20 players for the 2013 senior squad, as manager Aaron Callaghan and assistant Owen Heary continue building their team.

The latest new recruits to Bohemians are: goalkeeper Dean Delany (from Shelbourne), forward Darragh Hanaphy (from Newry City), forward Chris Lyons (from UCD), midfielder Niall Forrester (from Sacred Heart, previously with Shamrock Rovers Under-19s) and midfielder Conor O’Brien, son of former assistant manager Liam O’Brien and a former Bohemian under-19 player, who returns to Ireland after a period in the United States.

Rejoining Bohemians again for next season are Dave Mulcahy, Kevin Devaney and Karl Moore, while Owen Heary has also re-signed as a player.

Callaghan was particularly delighted at re-signing former St Pat’s man Mulcahy (right) and said: “Dave’s vast experience was vital last season in helping our young squad adapt to the Airtricity Premier Division.”

Squad members announced earlier this month were: Ryan McEvoy, Derek Pender, Luke Byrne, Keith Buckley, Greg Murray, Michael Barker, Dave Scully, Roberto Lopes, Stephen Traynor, Andy Mulligan and John O’Connor, all re-signed from 2012, along with former UCD left back Ciaran Nangle.

Manager Callaghan hopes to add several more players before training resumes on 14 January, adding: “Having the squad together for a pre-season is very important not just in terms of fitness but tactically and mentally, getting the lads ready for what will be a tough campaign.

“We can no longer compete with most of the teams in the league as far as budget is concerned, but with most of the squad having played here last season they will have the confidence to go out and express themselves on the pitch and play football the Bohemian way.

“I know the fans appreciated last season the way we tried to play football and the support was phenomenal. The backing of the fans meant so much to the dressing room especially when we didn’t do well.”

“We have already arranged two warm-up games against Longford and Athlone in Dalymount (details will be announced in club website when confirmed).”

Meanwhile,  Callaghan has appointed Paul Somers as chief scout for Bohemian FC.

Paul, who is a UEFA “A” licence coach, worked with UCD and managed St Patrick’s Athletic’s under-19 team.

STUDENTS UP FIRST IN 2013

The 2013 Airtricity League fixture list was released earlier today and sees Bohemians kicking off the new season at home to UCD on Friday March 8th.

The following week (Friday March 15th), the Gypsies travel to Turner’s Cross to take on Cork City.

Four days later (Tuesday March 19th), Aaron Callaghan’s men host Trevor Croly’s new-look Shamrock Rovers at Dalymount Park in the first big Dublin derby of the year.

Bohs’ first trip to Thomond Park to take on newly-promoted Limerick comes on Tuesday April 16th.
