CREEVY SIGNS FROM STUDENTS

Robbie Creevy tonight became the 18th player signed up for the Bohemians first team for 2015.

The 25-year-old former Shamrock Rovers midfielder joins the Gypsies after five years with UCD.

Manager Keith Long said: “Robbie’s established himself in the league now over the last number of years.

“He probably slips under the radar a bit but it is clear he has bags of ability and is more than capable of making the step up and produce the goods for a bigger club like Bohemians.”

SQUAD TAKING SHAPE

Bohemians are delighted to announce that manager Keith Long has added five new players and re-signed 12 of last season’s team as he continues to build his squad for 2015.

Midfielders Kealan Dillon, 20, and Dylan Hayes, 19, have followed Long from Athlone Town. Defender Lorcan Fitzgerald, 25, strikers Marc Griffin, 23, and Dean Kelly, 29, have joined from St Patrick’s Athletic, Dundalk and Shamrock Rovers respectively.

Long hopes to add further players in the coming weeks, while 17-year-old midfielder Robert Duggan is set to join on loan from Peterborough United in January.

“I know from working with them last season that Kealan and Dylan fit the bill,” Long said.

“They’re two young players who were both very highly rated as schoolboys with Kealan going to Derby and Hull, and Dylan going to Derby too as well as playing for Ireland all the way through to under-19 level.

“They have great potential and are hungry to succeed. Having a tough season of League of Ireland football under their belts with benefit them coming here.”

Up front, Long has backed his former Bray Wanderers team-mate Jason Byrne, who turns 37 in February, to continue to deliver after he agreed to play on for another season.

“We’ve four strikers now and I guess you could call Jason the daddy of the group,” Long said.

“At his age, we know we have to manage how we use Jason but he’s shown he is still very capable and he can also school the other strikers in the squad.

“There is good competition for places up front now with Jason, Marc, Dean and Adam Evans. That’s what we need.

“Marc was something of a frustrated onlooker at times for Dundalk this season and a big move to Derry a couple of seasons back didn’t quite work out but he comes here still young and hungry now to start afresh.

“Dean’s experienced, has scored important goals and won league titles but now he’s at a stage of career where he wants and needs to be playing regularly. We think he can do that here and produce goals.

“Adam is young and will feel he has something to prove too. It’s a good mix.”

Bohs’ defence has been bolstered by the arrival of Fitzgerald, while Long hopes to add another centre-half and back-up goalkeeper in the coming weeks.

He said: “Lorcan’s had a frustrating two seasons at St Pat’s. But he’s a very talented player and well-schooled having been at West Ham when he was younger. He’s naturally left-footed, which give us something extra, and still only 25.”

As well as welcoming the new arrivals, Long also paid tribute to the foundations laid by his predecessor Owen Heary.

He hopes the continuity of re-signing 12 of the 2014 side and retaining the backroom team of Graham O’Hanlon, Fred Davis and Collie O’Connor will prove a big benefit.

“Owen dig a good job here and the onus is on us now to try and build upon the success of last season,” he said. “We’ve managed to keep some of the big players of 2014 – the likes of Derek Pender, Daniel Byrne, Roberto Lopes and Karl Moore and others.

“It’s important to have that bit of continuity in the team and staff. I’ve played with Graham and I know him well and Fred brings years of experience, so I’m looking forward to working with them both.

“The club have talented players coming through too – Stephen Best is an exciting prospect and we saw Jake Hyland break into the first team last season as well. There’s a good base there for young players to progress.”

Fans will get the chance to meet Long at a Q&A session at Dalymount Park on Friday December 12th. More details to follow.

KEITH LONG APPOINTED MANAGER

Bohemian FC announces the appointment of Keith Long as the club’s senior team manager following the recent departure of Owen Heary.

Keith, 40, arrives at Dalymount Park having managed Bray Wanderers and Athlone Town.

In his playing career Keith had spells with Stoke City, Dundalk, St Patrick’s Athletic and Bray Wanderers, winning league titles with both Dundalk and St Patrick’s.

“We would like to welcome Keith to the club and look forward to him building on the progress Bohemians made this season,” said Bohemian club president Matt Devaney.

Keith Long said: “I am delighted to be taking over as manager of Bohemian FC and I am very much looking forward to working at this great football club.

“Preparations for next season will begin immediately and we will endeavour to build on the progress made this year.”

GYPSIES SNATCH SEVENTH IN PARTING GIFT TO HEARY

BOHEMIANS 2 – 1 DERRY CITY

Departing Bohemians manager Owen Heary signed off with another impressive home win as the Gypsies leapfrogged visitors Derry City into 7th place as the dust settled on the 2014 SSE Airtricity League season. Goals from the prolific strike partnership of Dinny Corcoran and Jason Byrne clawed back a lead against a Derry side with one eye on next week’s FAI Cup final.

It was a strange atmosphere in Dalymount, with many fans unsure if this was the last time they’d see some of these players in red and black. Heary’s departure was all-but confirmed, but there were still 3 vital points to play for. A 7th place finish with respectable cup runs would be undoubtedly a season of exceeded expectations, and that’s exactly how it played out, writes KEVIN FAGAN.

Heary’s final selection was a familiar 4-4-2, with Jason Byrne captaining the side. Kevin Devaney returned to the right wing, and resumed his terrorising of defences with incisive runs. He was backed up on the right flank by Steven Beattie – how Bohs fans would dearly love to see those two don the famous jersey in 2015.

However, it was a depleted Derry who took the lead. The Candystripes named only 5 substitutes and were without key men Rory Patterson, and Patrick McEleney, but that didn’t stop an impressive opener. Youngster Josh Treacy was offered too much space in front of the back four, and he picked out Mark Timlin on the right edge of the box. Timlin jinked inside Jack Memery, and fired a low drive into Dean Delany’s bottom corner.

Before Friday, Bohs had not come from behind to win a game this season, but that was all to change once the strike partnership of Jason Byrne and Dinny Corcoran clicked into action. Corcoran’s equaliser was his 20th of the season in all competitions, a fantastic return for the Donabate man. Eoin Wearen collected a clearance, and floated the ball back into the box. Derry seemed to stop, thinking Corcoran was offside – but he had time to control on the chest and side-foot Bohs back into it.

On what was likely his last appearance in a Bohs shirt, Steven Beattie was excellent in the right back role. Bombing forward with Devaney on the right, he earned Bohs a penalty on the stroke of half time. Played through by Devaney, he got to the ball a split-second before Ger Doherty in the Derry goal. Referee Andrew Mullaly first indicated a free kick, but after consultation with his assistant, pointed to the spot. Jason Byrne stepped up and did what he does best – scoring yet another league of Ireland winner.

Byrne left the field to a standing ovation late in the second half. With Derry having made their three substitutes, a serious head injury to Ryan McBride meant that Bohs played against 10-men in the last 10 minutes. Dinny had the chance to get a 21st goal in injury time, but his penalty was skewed wide.

The next league game in Dalymount in March will see a new manager, and almost certainly a much-changed squad. A stablised Bohs can now look up the table, and forward to the future.

Bohemians: Dean Delany, Steven Beattie, Roberto Lopes, Aidan Price, Jack Memery, Kevin Devaney (Jake Hyland, 80), Keith Buckley (Paddy Kavanagh, 80), Eoin Wearen, Karl Moore, Dinny Corcoran, Jason Byrne (Craig Walsh, 80). Subs not used: Ryan McEvoy, Adam Evans, Paddy Collins, Gavin Moore.

Derry City: Ger Doherty, Barry Molloy, Shane McEleney, Aaron Barry (Ryan McBride, 46), Dean Jarvis, Mark Timlin, Danny Ventre, Sean Houston (Philip Lowry, 15), Joshua Tracey, Ryan Curran, Nathan Boyle (Stephen Dooley, 68). Subs not used: Michael Duffy, Ciaran Gallagher.

CLUB STATEMENT RE: OWEN HEARY

As Owen Heary’s tenure as manager of Bohemian FC ends, the club expresses its heartfelt thanks to Owen for his outstanding service to Bohemians.

Bohemian FC extends its very best wishes to Owen Heary in the next stage of his illustrious career in League of Ireland football.

“We have been lucky and privileged to have a person of the calibre and qualities of Owen Heary with us, ” said club president Matt Devaney.

“Over eight seasons with Bohemians Owen Heary has been an exemplary leader in many roles, as captain, as coach to youth teams, as assistant manager, and most recently as manager.

“In this season he and his squad achieved much more than was expected of them in the league, the FAI Cup and the league cup.

“We want to thank the fans, particularly those who have travelled away with us”

BOHEMIANS v DERRY CITY
SSE Airtricity League, Dalymount Park, Friday 24 October, 7.45pm

Bohemian manager Owen Heary has called for a big show of support from fans as they play Derry in the final game of the season.

Heary is keeping his players focused on a victory to secure 40 points and seventh position in the league.

“It would be a great achievement for the team and for the club to make seventh, as well as having reached a cup quarter-final and a cup-semi-final,” the manager said.

“We’ll play with the same kind of intensity as we have been, and we’ll aim to finish the season on a high. It would be nice to be able to say we beat the cup finalists.”

But Heary also wants a big crowd there to “applaud the players, and thank them”.

“We want to thank the fans as well, particularly those who have travelled away with us,” he said. “We’ll be happy to sit down with them after the game and celebrate a long, tough season but also an enjoyable one.”

For Friday Dave Mulcahy and Stephen Best are automatically suspended as a result of red cards against Cork. Anto Murphy is also suspended for accumulated yellow cards, having very recently come back from injury.

Derek Pender and Dan Byrne are out injured for the longer-term. But Aidan Price and Paddy Kavanagh return from suspension and Roberto Lopes is available this week.

Heary had to shuffle his defence last week and will have to do so again. “Last week we had Steven Beattie at right-back and Mullers [Dave Mulcahy] at centre-half and we can mix it around again. It’s important that we have players who can play in a couple of positions,” he said.

Heary aimed this season to produce a side that can compete with the best and his team continued to do that last weekend in Cork, going down to the title contenders by a single goal from a long-range free.

“We were unfortunate to go down to a bit of a fluke of a goal, but we kept battling away and gave them a game. It’s important that we keep that mentality in the club,” said Heary.
