“We have to be ready for them”

CORK CITY v BOHEMIANS
SSE Airtricity League, Turner’s Cross, Friday 12 August, 7.45pm

Keith Long has told Bohemians to be ready for a Cork City backlash at Turner’s Cross on Friday.

John Caulfield’s side’s surprise 2-1 defeat to Sligo Rovers on Monday saw them pass up the opportunity to close the gap on faltering league leaders Dundalk.

But after Dundalk lost against Bray Wanderers on Wednesday for their second successive defeat, there is added expectation on Leeside.

Long said: “They will be well up for it. John Caulfield will be looking for a response after losing to Sligo.

“They would have seen Monday’s game as a chance to make ground up on Dundalk and they’ll be looking at Friday night the same way.

“It’s not a good time to be playing them but it’s never easy against Cork anyway. We have to be ready for them and concentrate on our own game.”

After defeats against Shamrock Rovers and Derry City, Bohs got back to winning ways last Friday with a hard-earned 2-0 victory against a stubborn Finn Harps side.

Long said: “We’ve played better and lost this season. It wasn’t a a great game but the attitude of the players was spot on throughout and I thought we deserved to win the game.

“We had players struggling with match fitness – Stephen Best and Lorcan Fitzgerald hadn’t played in a month so we were pleased to have them available again and to get all three points.

“They were two very well-worked goals by us. The substitutes we made were crucial in breaking them down. Jake Kelly came on after the break and Eoin Wearen then added that bit of spark and creativity that we needed.”

TEAM NEWS

New signing Dean O’Halloran is expected to feature in Friday’s squad, subject to international clearance for the 20-year-old former Fulham player arriving on Friday.

Long said: “Dean’s very quick. He’s not overly physical – but his pace will stretch the opposition and we needed that.

“He’s not 100% fit yet and hasn’t played in the League of Ireland before but I think he’ll prove to be a good addition to the team.

“He can play out wide or as a No 10 and will offer support up front, running off the likes of Izzy and bringing players into it.”

Bohs also welcome back Dan Byrne and Keith Buckley from suspension.

But Dylan Hayes (ankle), who returned to training this week, remains a doubt, while Stephen Best is a doubt again after suffering a fresh knee injury in last week’s game against Finn Harps.

DEAN O’HALLORAN SIGNS

Bohemians are delighted to announce the signing of former Ireland youth international Dean O’Halloran from Fulham.

The Waterford man, 20, can operate as a striker or a winger.

Bohs boss Keith Long said: “Dean’s a very talented young player. He’s lightning quick and has great potential.

“There were a lot of clubs in the league interested in signing Dean so we are very pleased to have got him on board.”

“MAKE THE JERSEY YOUR OWN”

BOHEMIANS v FINN HARPS
SSE Airtricity League, Dalymount Park, Friday 5 August, 7.45pm

Keith Long has told his players to go out and stamp their authority on the game against Finn Harps on Friday.

The past fortnight has seen two key performers, Dave Mulcahy and Ayman Ben Mohamed, depart the club.

But Long maintains there is enough quality in the squad to step up and fill the void left by departures, suspensions and injury.

He said: “We are expected to win at home to Finn Harps. They are above us in the table, but a win would see us leapfrog them.

“To do that, we need to work hard to stamp our authority on the game. We have some good, quality players in this squad but they have to go out and show it.

“We’ve lost two players, we have two players suspended and we still have others coming back from injury.

“But that creates an opportunity for others to go out, put the jersey on and make it their own.”

With last Friday’s league game against Dundalk postponed due to the Lilywhites’ involvement in the Champions League qualifiers, Bohs are still looking to make up for their last league outing a fortnight ago, which saw Derry City come away from Dalymount with a 1-0 win.

Long said: “Our last home game against Derry was poor. We never got going.

“At the same time, there was not a lot in it either. Derry are flying up the top of the table and we weren’t a millions miles off them.

“But as has sometimes been the story of our season so far to date, we didn’t create enough chances and the ones we did create, we didn’t put them away. We need to improve.”

Although frustrated to lose two consistent performers, Long has wished both Mulcahy and Ben Mohamed well in their respective moves to Cork City and L’Espérance Sportive de Tunis (Tunisia).

He said: “They’re both at very different stages of their careers and both left in very different circumstances. But you are always disappointed to lose players.

“Dave is self-employed and is primarily working in the Munster area at the moment. It’s also a chance for him, after 17 years in the league, to win his first league medal.

“We were very reluctant to let him go but he’s given great service to Bohs for five years and it would have been hard to deny him that opportunity at this stage of his career.

“Ayman’s had interest from home and abroad, particularly after his call-up to the Tunisia squad. He’s had a great few months for us, we are very disappointed to lose him so soon but we wish him well.

“It’s a chance for him now to make the step up to full-time football and, hopefully, break into the Tunisian national team too. We wish him every success.”

Bohs will once again be without Keith Buckley, who serves an additional one-game ban after his red card against Shamrock Rovers last month. Also suspended is Dan Byrne for accumulating five yellow cards this season.

Dylan Hayes (ankle) remains out. But there was better news elsewhere as Lorcan Fitzgerald (ankle) came through a full 90 minutes in last week’s 3-0 friendly win against St Mochta’s, while Stephen Best (knee) returned to training after nearly a month out.

One player who has put himself in contention is Marco Chindea. The striker signed from Athlone last month, made his debut from the bench against Derry and scored in the friendly against St Mochta’s.

Long added: “Marco’s looked really good in training. He’s scored goals for Athlone in the First Division so obviously this is a bit of a step up. But he’s got technical ability, took his goal against St Mochta’s very well and he’s given us something to think about.”

“I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone at ‪Bohs‬ immensely.

Fee agreed for proposed sale of Ayman Ben Mohamed

Bohemians can confirm the club has agreed an undisclosed fee for the sale of Ayman Ben Mohamed to L’Espérance Sportive de Tunis.

The agreement is subject to international clearance, the player passing a medical and agreeing personal terms with the Tunisian club.

Ben Mohamed, 21, joined Bohemians at the start of this season having previously lined out for Longford Town and UCD.

His starring performances this season saw him earn an international call-up from Tunisia for their Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Djibouti in June.

The London-born midfielder, who moved to Ireland with his family when he was two, qualifies for Tunisia through his father Lotfi, who is originally from the Tunisian capital Tunis.

Dave Henderson appointed Head of Recruitment

Bohemians are delighted to announce the appointment of Dave Henderson as the club’s new Head of Recruitment.

Cabra man Henderson, 56, has a long association with Bohs.

He was the Gypsies’ goalkeeper between 1992 and 1998 and was part of Pat Fenlon’s backroom team between 2008 and 2011, serving as chief scout and later as goalkeeping coach.

Most recently, Henderson was chief scout at Shamrock Rovers and has previously served on the backroom teams of Shelbourne and Hibernian.

During Henderson’s last stint at Dalymount Park, he was responsible for signing players who went on to further their careers abroad, such as Paddy Madden and Matt Doherty, or become established members of the Bohemians first team, including Roberto Lopes and Keith Buckley.

Bohs manager Keith Long said: “Since I came to the club, I’ve been looking to bring in someone of the ilk of Dave Henderson.

“He has a proven track record with spotting talent and potential in young players.

“I’m delighted we’ve got him on board. He will prove to be an invaluable asset as we look to build our squads.”
