Remembering Ger Byrne

What do you say when words are not enough?

Everyone at Bohemians was devastated to learn of the tragic passing of long-standing member and lifelong supporter Ger Byrne last Friday.

Ger was an immensely popular figure at Dalymount Park and his presence will be sorely missed by all lucky enough to have known him. We wish to extend our condolences to his family and his many friends at the club.

Ger’s funeral will take place this Saturday in Glasnevin Crematorium at 1.30pm and the Byrne family have asked that Bohs fans in attendance wear red and black.

We also encourage supporters to sign the online book of condolences to let Ger’s family know that they are in our thoughts at this difficult time.

A message from the Byrne family

We wish to thank firstly the club and fans for all the support, love and compassion you have all shown us since Friday, and especially to Matt who has gone out of his way to facilitate our requests and help organise Ger’s funeral.

We would also like to thank the Bohs community for all the messages of support and social media posts about Ger.

To know how much he meant to so many has made an incredibly difficult time slightly more bearable.

Finally, a very special thanks to all who organised the tribute to Ger at Friday’s game away to Shels at such short notice. You’ll never know how much that meant to us all.

A message from Matt Devaney

Ger was my friend and we will all miss him dearly. He was without doubt the funniest bloke I knew, and over the past week or so we have all reminisced and remembered some of his great gags and brilliant stories; Ger could literally write a book on his adventures from the Congo to Botswana.

I was lucky to be his friend, I was lucky to have travelled the length and breadth of the country and indeed Europe following Bohs and sharing unbelievable experiences with him.

It is at times like this that the Bohs family really shines through and looks after our own and Ger’s brothers Phil and Col and especially his Dad Henry, who are all Bohs stalwarts, will need our support over the coming weeks and months.

Ger is more broadly known as the man who introduced Hold Me Now to Bohs, what an incredible legacy to leave behind.

Every time his friends and family will hear that from now on, it will remind us of what a special person he was.

RIP Ger.

Two months to the day since the passing of our beloved Mam, Maureen. We have lost one of the gentlest and funniest people, whom we had the pleasure to call our brother and son. Unbearably missed by his dad Henry, sisters Patricia and Pauline, brothers Colin and Philip, along with all his nieces and nephews Philip, Dara, Ben, Amy, Callum, Lauren, Eleanor, Saibh, Matilda, Mabel and Sadie, sister-in-law Sarah and brothers-in-law John and Alan, and all his extended family and many, many friends.Ger was a true Bohemian until the end. He loved, and was much loved, by all at Dalymount Park (especially the legacy fans).

“Raindrops keep falling on my head

But that doesn’t mean my eyes will soon be turning red

Crying’s not for me

‘Cause I’m never gonna stop the rain by complaining

Because I’m free

Nothing’s worrying me.”

Look after each other Mam and Ger. Although we’ll miss you with all our hearts, it’s a comfort to know that you are together making each other laugh again.

May he rest in peace.
