Bohemian FC and Bang Bang launch 7th Annual Toy Drive for Children in Direct Provision, aiming to raise €80,000

Bohemian FC, in collaboration with Bang Bang Cafe, is proud to announce the launch of our seventh annual Toy Drive for children living in Direct Provision. This year, the drive is set to reach new heights with a goal of raising €80,000 to bring joy and hope to children experiencing difficult circumstances during the festive season.

In the spirit of community and solidarity, Bohemian FC and Bang Bang are calling on members, fans and the wider community to contribute to this important cause. The drive, which has seen immense success in previous years, aims to ensure that every child in Direct Provision receives a gift this Christmas.

“Times have been tough for everyone, and sadly there are a lot of causes deserving of support right now. However, children in Direct Provision have faced unique challenges,” said Daniel Lambert, COO of Bohemian FC. “With the collective effort of our community, we can make a significant difference in their lives.”

Since its inception, the Toy Drive has grown exponentially, reflecting the compassionate spirit of the community. In 2018, the drive provided gifts for nearly 100 children. By 2021, thanks to generous donations, over €80,000 was raised, bringing joy to thousands of children across Ireland. The same sum was raised again last year. For the last two years, there was sufficient support from the community to provide toys to homeless children in Dublin, through Focus Ireland.

As with previous years, this year’s drive is supported by MASI – Movement of Asylum Seekers in Ireland, and will involve a majority of online donations. Physical gift donations are also welcomed at Bang Bang and Bohemian FC in Phibsborough (new and unwrapped gifts only, please respect the request for no large or second-hand items).

The funds raised will be used to purchase gifts, with an estimated budget of €35 per child, ensuring a thoughtful and meaningful present for each child in Direct Provision. The collaboration extends to the RDS for sorting and packing of gifts, and DHL Express Ireland for the delivery of packages across Ireland.

“This initiative is more than just a toy drive; it’s a message of welcome and inclusion,” added Lucky Khambule of MASI. “While we advocate for an end to the inhumane conditions of Direct Provision, we also want to make the experiences of the children in the system brighter.”

The Bohemian FC and Bang Bang Toy Drive stands as a testament to the power of community action and empathy. Donations can be made through the official GoFundMe campaign or by dropping gifts at designated locations.

This year has presented many challenges for people fleeing from trouble and seeking to settle in Ireland. Together, we can ensure that every child in Direct Provision feels the warmth and joy this Christmas. We want to show them a heartfelt welcome and the true meaning of Nollaig Shona.
