CORCORAN SIGNS TWO-YEAR DEAL

Dinny Corcoran has signed a two-year contract to remain with Bohemians until the end of 2019.

In his third spell at the club, the 28-year-old striker finished the season as the league’s second highest goalscorer with a haul of 16 goals in 25 starts and one substitute appearance.

Manager Keith Long said: “Dinny is a key re-signing for us. He’s scored the bulk of our goals this season and his finishing has been superb.

“I can’t praise him enough and we’re delighted that he has recommitted.”

U19 LEAGUE CHAMPIONS

SSE AIRTRICITY U19 LEAGUE FINAL
Bohemians 1 St Patrick’s Athletic 0

The 2017 League of Ireland u19 season has came to its climax tonight here in Dalymount Park with a Dublin derby of Bohemians vs St. Patrick’s Athletic. The teams faced each other twice so far, this season, both tightly contested affairs with Bohs winning the first meeting 1-0 and St. Pats coming out on top in the second match 3-2, courtesy of a Michael Creggan hattrick.

The Gypsies came into the final as Northern division winners and beat Sligo Rovers 1-0 in their semi-final in a gripping encounter with the Westerners. St. Pat’s, however, come in off the back of a remarkable 7-4 victory over defending champions UCD. At one stage the Inchicore outfit were 5-1 up against the Students, but UCD pulled it back to 5-4 before St. Pat’s but the game to bed with two late goals.

The first half began timidly with both teams feeling each other out. St. Pats, however, got their feel quicker and began to assert themselves in the early going. An freekick from the half way line caused the Bohemians ‘keeper, Kian Clarke, trouble; the ball was floated in and while trying to come and punch the ball away, he miscued his effort and put Bohs on the backfoot but the ball was eventually cleared.

With St. Pat’s stifling the Gypsies passing game and causing trouble with set pieces, influential Bohs winger Cian McMullen went off injured in the 22nd minute and was replaced by Cian Fay. This move necessitated a tactical rejig, and Jamie Hamilton was moved to the left flank with Daniel Grant moved into the 10 role with Cian Fay deployed as the striker.

The game continued at a ponderous pace throughout the first half with both teams not willing to risk much early on. Saints striker Michael Creggan, presented the away side with the best chance of the half late on. He jinked down the right side of the Bohs defence and drove into the box, his cross somehow evading the Pat’s attackers and was cleared for a corner. The half ended 0-0.

Where the first half began at a crawl, the second half burst into life. Bohemians came out on the front foot and by the 52nd minute had taken the lead. Bohs won the ball back just inside their own half and, on the counter, Jamie Hamilton played a ball over the head of the right fullback for Daniel Grant who then slid the ball into the stride of Cian Fay and he dinked the ball into the box where Steven Nolan slammed the ball into the net. Bohemians instantly began pushing for the second goal, much of the play being orchestrated by Jamie Hamilton who ran the show all night for Bohemians.

A second goal would have been much appreciated for the home side, however, because just after the hour mark defensive lynchpin Warren O’Hora came off injured, replaced by Seán Bregazzi; another key player injured for Bohs. The Saints began to return to life and were turning the screw in their search for the equaliser and had the best chance of the game in the 71st minute. Pat’s goalkeeper, Eric Donnelly, cleared the ball downfield and Jason Grouse picked the ball up and seen Bohemians ‘keeper Kian Clarke miles off his line and caught in no-mans-land.

He rounded Clarke, who desperately tried to foul him, and took aim at goal but the Gypsies fullback, Andy Lyons, heroically stopped the ball from hitting the back of the net. As the game was reaching its climax, Clarke redeemed himself with a string of stunning saves. The first of which from a stinging shot from Michael Creggan that he turned over the bar in the 79th minute, and the second in the 89th, a header from Clinton Apos that was destined for the back of the net but Clarke’s hand came out of nowhere and rescued Bohemians. The breath-taking second half came to a close and Bohemians were crowned League of Ireland u19 champions.

Bohemians v St Patrick's Athletic - SSE Airtricity National Under 19 League Final

Dublin derby in U19 final tonight

(Please note earlier kick-off time of 7.30pm)

Tonight is your final chance to see a competitive game at Dalymount in 2017 as Bohemians host St Patrick’s Athletic in the SSE Airtricity U19 League final.

Graham Lawlor’s U19s topped the Northern Division this season and have beaten Limerick in the quarter-finals and Sligo Rovers in the last four to bring them to tonight’s decider.

Graham, Craig Sexton and their team of players have put an enormous amount of effort into this season, so we hope we can rely on the support of as many of you as possible at tonight’s game as they look to give it one final push.

As it is an official FAI cup final, there is an admission charge of €5 which also applies to members.

Lawlor said: “The players have had another fantastic season and to finish top of our division is a great achievement in itself.

“We’ve then come through two tough teams to reach the final and it would be great if they could cap off a great season with a win.

“It obviously adds a little something extra when you are playing a derby and I’m sure St Pat’s will bring a few fans to Dalymount with them.

“Pat’s have had a really good season themselves, coming through a difficult semi-final against UCD only a few days ago.

“We’ve had a number of players go up to the first-team throughout the year, so I think it shows how well the entire squad has done as the first-team manager Keith Long is great for promoting the youth.

“We had several players involved in the final game of the season which was great but now we need to focus and hopefully end the season with some silverware.”

Jimmy Mowlds’ U17s also had an excellent season and Cork City needed a penalty shootout to beat them after a 0-0 draw in their SSE Airtricity U17 League final at Turner’s Cross on Monday.

While Mowlds’ young guns were bitterly disappointed to lose the shootout 4-2, they can reflect fondly on a campaign which saw them win away ties against Shamrock Rovers and Waterford in their difficult route to the final.

“WE WANT TO GIVE FANS A SEND-OFF”

Bohemians go into their final league game of the season buoyed by some of their key men agreeing to remain at Dalymount Park next year.

Five players – Dan Byrne, Rob Cornwall, Paddy Kavanagh, Derek Pender and Shane Supple – extended their stay at the club this week.

It brings to eight the number of players under contract for next season after rising stars Oscar Brennan, Warren O’Hora and Fuad Sule inked new deals at the start of August.

This time last year, Bohs had nobody under contract for 2017 so manager Keith Long is relieved to have some of his business done early.

He said: “We are in a stronger position now than we are last year. It’s important to have key players committed as we want to improve next season if we can.

“Derek Pender as captain and Shane Supple as vice-captain, they were two players I wanted to tie down as they drive the culture we’re trying to create at this club.

“They lead by example and we hope that by tying them down already, others will follow suit.

“We re-signed some of our younger players in August too. The fans’ player fund mid-season allowed us to do that and bring in the likes of Dan Casey who has a very bright future.

“For that, we are extremely grateful. It is a testament to the backing we’ve had from our supporters this season and we really want to give them a send-off tomorrow.”

Last week’s stunning 1-0 victory away to Dundalk secured a top-half finish for a team bookies at the start of the season had tipped to be relegated.

And a win against Finn Harps tomorrow coupled with a Bray Wanderers defeat away to Cork City would see Bohs finish as high as fifth.

Long said: “It hasn’t always been plain sailing. We’ve had our ups and downs but overall it’s been a rewarding season.

“We were looking over our shoulders at various stages but we always felt that we had enough in the dressing room to be safe.

“There are three full-time teams below us fighting for survival on the last day – they would all love to be in our position right now.

“Players and staff have worked extremely hard and put in extra hours and extra training to make sure we could first of all survive and then finish as high up the table as possible.

“The backroom staff have been excellent – from Trevor Croly right down. It’s been a collective effort from everyone at the club.

“Pound for pound, the players have done extremely well. They deserve an enormous amount of credit for their efforts.”

Against already-relegated Harps, Bohs are facing one of their bogey teams in recent seasons.

Long added: “We’ve found them difficult opponents. They are a very well-organised team.

“I commiserate with Ollie Horgan on their relegation, but I feel their absence from the division will be a short-term one.”

TEAM NEWS

Goalkeeper Supple (knee) is set to miss a league game for the first time this season. Colin McCabe, signed as back-up in August following his release from Celtic, is likely to make debut in his place.

Dylan Hayes (foot) is also set to sit this one out, while Dan Byrne, Rob Cornwall and Keith Ward are all suspended.

Warren O’Hora (hamstring) will return, while Eoin Wearen (cruciate) is likely to get first run-out of the year having returned to matchday squad v Dundalk last week.

TRIO RE-SIGN FOR 2018

Bohemians manager Keith Long has agreed new contracts with a further three players today.

Skipper Derek Pender, Dan Byrne and Patrick Kavanagh have signed deals to remain at Dalymount Park for the 2018 season.

It will be a seventh season at Bohs for right-back Pender, who was signed by Aaron Callaghan in 2012 and was made club captain when Owen Heary became manager in 2013.

‘Detser’, 33, battled back from an Achilles injury in 2015 and has led by example once again this year in what has been one one of his standout seasons in red and black.

A boyhood supporter of the club, Byrne, 24, came through the ranks with the Bohs U19s in 2011 and made his first-team debut in 2012.

After a brief stint with Kilbarrack, Byrne returned to Dalymount in July 2013. Injuries – cruciate and knee cartilage – seriously disrupted his progress in 2014 and 2015.

As a result, he was restricted to just two substitute league appearances in 2015. But the way he has bounced back since is a testament to his character.

He has been a regular this season and last. He made 26 league appearances in 2016 and has gone one better this year so far with 27.

Kavanagh, 31, joined Bohs at the start of the 2014 season, scoring on his debut against UCD.

Complemented by the attacking flair of Ismahil Akinade, Dinny Corcoran and Keith Ward, he too is enjoying one of his most impressive seasons at Bohs.

Today’s re-signings come on the back of Shane Supple and Rob Cornwall agreeing new contracts with the club yesterday.

It brings to eight the number of players under contract at Bohemians for next season: Oscar Brennan, Dan Byrne, Rob Cornwall, Paddy Kavanagh, Derek Pender, Fuad Sule, Shane Supple, Warren O’Hora.

SSE AIRTRICITY CLUB AWARDS

Bohemians would like to thank all of the volunteers and members of our club after their efforts behind the scenes were recognised at today’s inaugural SSE Airtricity League Club Awards at Dublin City Hall.

Bohs won top gong in two categories: Best Family Initiative (Junior Gypsies) and Best Overall Marketing.

We also finished runners-up in a further two categories: Best Community Initiative (Bohemian Foundation) and the Overall SSE Airtricity League Club of the Season Award.

In addition to the league awards, Bohemians received a further award from the Lord Mayor of Dublin Mícheál Mac Donncha in recognition for the club’s work in the community.

These awards are a testament to the work of a small but dedicated team of volunteers we have at our club.

It is what we believe a fan-owned community club ought to be about – pulling together to help our club realise its potential.

The future is red and black – on and off the pitch!
