It was a full house in Dalymount on the first night of the season, and Bohs didn’t disappoint, winning 1-0 v Finn Harps. Keith Long took some time after the game to discuss the performance, a challenging pre-season and his hopes for the young squad. Interview by Jamie O’Halleron, filmed by Sean De Faoite.

BOHS KICK OFF NEW SEASON WITH VICTORY

CORCORAN THE MATCHWINNER, continuing where he left off last season with the only goal in a hard fought one-nil victory over Finn Harps.

112 days , nine new signings in the off season but it was the Bohs “old guard” who got them over the line at a packed Dalymount park.

The much changed Bohs side, giving debuts to five players, looked to take the game to the newly promoted visitors and should have taken the lead with just 10 minutes played. Keith Wards delightful pass over the top found the right to left run of Dinny Corcoran who controlled well, but scuffed his left footed volley straight at Burke.

The visitors stemmed the tide and began to get a foot hold in the game, with skipper Gareth Harkin making his presence felt in the middle of the park. Ollie Horgans men were terribly unlucky not to snatch the lead when Daniel O’Reillys header hit the foot of the post from Gareth Harkins inswinging delivery.

With nothing between the sides, it took until five minutes before the break for the first real bit of footballing quality to rear its head in the game and it was three of the “regulars” who combined brilliantly. Ward fizzed a through ball to Corcoran, who had the presence of mind to step over the ball to Keith Buckley, who in turn, layed it off first time back to Corcoran to tap home, with the help of the post.

The Gypsies dominated much of the second half and just after the hour mark really should have put the game to bed. The hugely impressive Danny Mandroiu played in fellow debutant Luke Ward-Slater for a one on one, but shot straight at Burke. From the resuting rebound Dinny Corcoran skied his effort with the goal at his mercy.

Bohs eventually got over the line and hung on for a valuable three points following some severe Harps pressure as Keith Longs new look side get off to an impressive start showing some grit and determination with flashes of brilliance through man of the match, Mandroiu.

“A packed Jodi Stand can spur on our new players”

BOHEMIANS v FINN HARPS
Friday February 15th 2019, Dalymount Park, 7.45pm

Bohemians welcome newly-promoted Finn Harps to Dalymount tomorrow with skipper Derek Pender telling his new team-mates to embrace the season’s opening night but warning them to be prepared for a tough battle.

Harps have not beaten the Gypsies at Dalymount Park in 20 years but every point won against Ollie Horgan’s teams is a hard-earned one.

That is a message the experienced Pender – 35 and begining his eighth season at Dalymount Park – is keen to impress upon his inexperienced team-mates.

There is a feeling that there is potential in this Bohs dressing room. Players of experience – such as Shane Supple and Ian Morris – have left and have been replaced by youth.

Pender is the oldest player in the squad by five years with Dinny Corcoran, 30 yesterday, the only other player not in his teens or 20s.

New arrivals such as James Talbot in goals, James Finnerty in defence and Daniel Mandroiu, Luke Wade-Slater and Conor Levingston in midfield, will be hoping to copy the example set by Darragh Leahy, thrown in at the deep end for his debut aged 19 on opening night last season against Shamrock Rovers, and rising to the challenge of first-team football.

Pender said: “We’ve done well against Harps at home when they were in the division before before but we all know that they have got results against us in the past too – most notably in the cup in Ballybofey two years ago – so we expect a really tough opening game.

“People might think they’re a team we should be beating but football doesn’t always work that way. We have a lot of new and young players and it will take time for them to adapt to the physical side of the game in our league.

“We don’t know how long it will take them to adapt. It took us a while to find our rhythm last year but we are determined to get off to a good start this year and hopefully we can click a bit earlier this season.

“It’s a big step for our new players. They’ll soon find that our league is a tough one. You don’t get a minute – it’s fast and furious. They will need to learn quickly and that’s why we try to make our training as competitive as when you’re playing so it’s not such a shock to the system.”

Pender and Co are all the more determined to hit the ground running having had hopes of a positive season curtain-raiser – an IRN-BRU Cup quarter-final against East Fife – dashed due to a frozen pitch at Dalymount a fortnight ago.

Bohs fans turned up in good numbers that Saturday afternoon but left disappointed not to see Keith Long’s new-look side.

Pender said: “There was a good crowd here for the East Fife game and we were disappointed it had to be called off, as I know our fans were too.

“But hopefully that whetted the appetite a bit and we’ll have a big crowd for the first game. A big crowd will be something new for our new players and playing in front of a packed Jodi Stand with our fans behind them will be an experience for them that will really lift them and hopefully spur them on.

“Our fans have really driven us on in recent years and they can really drive our new players on too. They’ve always been behind us, particularly in the last few years.

“Every time I step on to the pitch they give me a lift. I’ve been a player in this league for a good number of years and nothing lifts you like Bohs supporters when they’re behind you.

“Even in the cup semi-final defeat to Cork City last season when we were all so devastated, they stayed behind to lift us. I’ve never experienced anything like what we had there.

“That bond is special and that’s something we want to build on. We always want to give something back to the fans for their support. People might say that’s a cliche but for me it’s not – I really mean it.”

MOUNTJOY HOSTS BOHEMIAN FOUNDATION NIGHT OF COMEDY AND MUSIC

The Bohemian Foundation continues to grow from strength to strength. This was clear as the Foundation hosted another great night of comedy and music in Mountjoy Prison last Friday.

Shane Supple was interviewed by Tommy Tiernan and the prisoners were delighted to hear that despite recently retiring, Shane aims to continue his work with the Foundation inside Mountjoy.

“Although I now have full-time job outside football and with the evenings getting brighter, I’ll have time to come into Mountjoy. Even though we recently lost players that were stalwarts of the Foundation, the new players are eager to get involved.

He added: “From my experience they’ll personally benefit greatly from working with the Foundation.”

Deputy Governor of Mountjoy Prison, Donnacha Walsh, explained on the night that this continuity is vital for the continued success of the development of the prisoners.

Lord Mayor of Dublin Nial Ring said: “What Thomas Hynes and the Bohemian Foundation are doing, in terms of reaching out to the community is fantastic,” he said. “The Foundation does stellar work in preparing prisoners to reintegrate into the community after their release and tonight was just another example of that.”

One of the eminent guests on the night was also full of praise for the work of the Bohemian Foundation. Lecturer in Criminology in Maynooth University, Dr Ian Marder said, “recent research indicates that physical activity in prisons, such as sports, can have a number of benefits for prisoners, including for their mental health and wellbeing. It can also act as a pathway to education, where sporting qualifications are made available.”

However, he stressed that the most important thing the Bohemian Foundation does is bring the community inside the prison walls.

Dr Marder said, “what the Bohemian Foundation is trying to do is show that the prison and the people in there are part of the community. The Foundation does this through the respect they show to the people they work with and by bringing the community into the prison with all the events they organise.”

Renowned medical anthropologist, Dr Dana Walrath, was also in attendance and she thanked the Bohemian Foundation for the invitation. She said, “it was such a wonderful night and I am so excited to work with the Foundation with any events they have planned in the future.”

JUNIOR GYPSIES CARDS NOT VALID FOR SHAMROCK ROVERS GAMES

Towards the end of last season, the board of Bohemian FC took the decision to remove Shamrock Rovers games from the Junior Gypsies package.

The removal of this fixture was included on the Junior Gypsies website page and also on our online store at point of purchase.

But to avoid confusion or disappointment given the likelihood that this game will sell out in the near future, we are writing to you to remind you of the decision and to explain the reasoning behind it.

This was not a decision we took lightly but one we believe necessary and fair.

The Junior Gypsies package has proved highly successful in recent seasons – more successful than we had ever imagined.

It is not a money-making scheme. It is an investment in our future designed to attract young people to our club and, we hope, create supporters for life.

Given the alternative price of individual U13/juvenile match tickets coupled with the goodies/packs Junior Gypsies receive in addition, it is clear that this is not an initiative we profit from in monetary terms.

It costs just €25 and, even with the removal of Shamrock Rovers games this season, still entitles card-holders to attend 16 league games.

The cost of an U13 match ticket is €5. To attend 16 league games without a Junior Gypsies ticket would cost €80.

We therefore believe the package offers unrivalled value in our league.

The decision to remove Shamrock Rovers game was taken because it is, at present, our league fixture most likely to sell out.

Due to the traditional high intensity and competitive atmosphere of this fixture, it is one many parents and guardians opt not to bring young children to.

This means that we have a fixture that on the face of it is ‘sold out’ yet seats remain empty.

This is because we obviously cannot resell a place in the ground set aside for Junior Gypsies card holders.

As a fan-owned and volunteer-run club aiming to compete in a league of private investment and some unsustainable trading, we struggle to stand over there being empty seats in a ‘sold-out’ game when we have fundraising committees working tirelessly to afford our first team the resources to compete to the best of its ability in a sustainable manner.

It was therefore the reluctant decision of the board to remove the two home Shamrock Rovers fixtures from the Junior Gypsies package.

Juvenile tickets for these fixtures can instead be bought at www.tickets.bohemians.ie

Please note there has been a sharp increase of ticket sales for the upcoming derby in recent days so we advise those wishing to purchase tickets to do so as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.

Your children are the future of our club and our volunteers are currently working on new and exciting gifts that differ from last year’s Junior Gypsies goodie bag.

We value your understanding and continued support and that of our Junior Gypsies, who we hope will remain supporters of our club and shape its future in years to come.

The Board of Management,
Bohemian FC
